LIFE CHANGING

Welcome home.

I grew up in Vermont in a relatively small community. I tend to think it was slightly secluded however there were definitely perks of growing up where I did. My family is different than the average due to my parent's, and soon to be my, profession. You see, we're a chiropractic family. To some, this may mean nothing, but to us it means everything. I grew up with a very different outlook on life and especially health. Our overarching belief was that the body is AMAZING. I will get further into this belief system in later blog posts but for, now suffice to say we were not part of the traditional medical paradigm. This unique view of health created a different approach to life. My sister and I learned how to trust our bodies from a very young age and it paid huge dividends on our health.

Despite growing up with this completely awesome, yet different, view on health and healthcare there is a time and a place for the medical profession. Unfortunately I had to experience the medical world, however, unusual to me, from a young age. Ever since I can remember I've had my yearly bloodwork but it wasn't until I was older that it mattered. My mother described it as precautionary from a young age and I don't really think I understood the full ramifications until my mid teens. The story goes that my mom found pink crystals in my diaper as an infant meaning I had some blood in my urine. This is generally an indication of kidney problems. Thinking it may be an infection she brought me to a pediatric nephrologist and we monitored it. Unfortunately it never completely cleared up.

Needless to say, this was a completely different experience for me throughout my childhood when compared to my usual health maintenance program of eating healthy, getting adjusted and getting regular exercise (playing outside). Nothing else really came of it until I was found to have a hearing loss in first grade during a routine school test. This rocked my world a bit. I ended up having more tests and was told I should get hearing aids which really rocked my world.

I was completely against this idea. As it played out I ended up caving, go figure a 6-year-old caving to his parents and got my first set of hearing aids. This didn't stop me from trying to find out as much as I possibly could in regards to my hearing.  Even from a young age I was inquisitive and one of my first questions of the audiologist as a child was "will this ever get better?" I had been taught optimism as a child and I truly believed that my body would be able to heal itself. Her response shocked me when she answered; "it will never get better, in fact, it will probably get worse." This is a moment and a phrase I will never forget. It taught me some of the harsher lessons about life but in the end, it left me with a wonderful example of how not to act.

I had a quick learning curve when it came to these nuances in my life, generally, it involved ignoring the problem even existed. I completely blocked these medical concerns out of my brain and for the next 15+ years nothing changed. My hearing stayed the same and today hasn't gotten any worse.  My kidney function stayed relatively even as well until later in my life. I credit the good health I had to my upbringing with chiropractic and the healthy lifestyle I lived.

This is my first blog post and I want to share my story and the chiropractic lifestyle with you. Each time I post I plan on adding other stories of my process and some explanation along the way. Follow my posts on instagram @the.big.idea for more inspiration and chiropractic lifestyle tips.
